Chae Dong Ha, Victim of the Gloomy Sunday Curse?

SG Wannabe Chae Dong Ha’s suicide sent shockwaves throughout the Kpop world but some people are pointing at an interesting source for the singer’s alleged depression. “Gloomy Sunday” was a song that on Chae Dong Ha’s first album released in November of 2002.
For those of you that don’t know, the song “Gloomy Sunday” was originally composed by Hungarian pianist and composer Rezso Seress in 1933. The original lyrics were very depressing and mourning to a lost lover and a pledge to commit suicide to meet the said lover again in the afterlife.

There have been several urban legends that surrounded the song, most of them being connected with various numbers of suicides and being allegedly banned from radio. Rezso Seress himself commit suicide, and even in the New York Times obituary in January 1968 read “Budapest, January 13. Rezsoe Seres, whose dirge-like song hit, "Gloomy Sunday" was blamed for touching off a wave of suicides during the nineteen-thirties, has ended his own life as a suicide it was learned today.”
The song since then has had a stigma attached to it as a suicide-song. Regardless of whether Chae Dong Ha is a victim of this curse, soompi.com wishes that his soul will rest in peace.
