The popularity of Korean idol girl- and boybands is rapidly growing, and with that, also the concern over the teenage stars is growing, especially concerning their sexualization.
Officials are trying to prevent idols, especially female, from being portrayed as sex objects. That is why the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) set new guidelines for management companies to use as standard contract terms. These guidelines include preventing underage artists from dressing in excessively sexual outfits, depriving them from their educational opportunities and working for too many hours.
However, FTC's guidelines are just suggestions to the management companies. They themselves can decide whether they want to adopt them or ignore them.
Beside that, FTC avoided to specify how "excessive outfits" should be defined, because, as a representative of the entertainment industry said, "there is no possible way to decide what is excessively sexual and what is not, especially when many of the bands are trained for an international audience."
