The Hallyu wave has brought a tremendous increase of Japanese and Chinese tourists to Korea. This, in turn, has caused a rush to establish more hotels in Korea. Last year, 8.8 million foreign tourists visited Korea, a 12.5% increase from the year before. 34% of tourists were Japanese and 21% of tourists were Chinese.
With foreigners visiting Korea on "repeat trips," hotels with price rates that allow guests to stay at places easily and carefree are now popular. However, Seoul has more "motel" and "inn" type lodgings and too few of Japan's "business hotel" type lodgings. Thus, the Korean government reports that there is a 15,000-20,000 room deficiency in Seoul's hotels.
As of right now, the development of more hotels to accommodate the increase in foreign tourists is the next big project in the Seoul hotel industry.
What do you think about the impact of the Hallyu wave on Seoul's hotels?
