Well-known figure skater Kim Yu Na is experiencing some difficulty with her first reality program, SBS' "Kiss and Cry", which recently posted the lowest ratings of variety television shows in the highly competitive Sunday evening time slot.
This past Sunday's episode of "Kiss and Cry" had an average viewer rating of merely 8.1 percent, which is down 2.4 points from the first show on May 22. It ranked last among Sunday evening variety shows, in contrast to MBC's "I am a Singer", which posted 14 percent, and KBS' "Qualifications of Men", whose ratings rose from 6.6 to 9.2 percent.
Some critics theorize that the reason "Kiss and Cry" is on the rocks is due to an overall lack of excitement. "Figure skating is not a sport that is enjoyed by the general public, and the concept of having 10 celebrities compete after being paired with 10 professional figure skaters can easily become boring." one expert explained.
The first episode elicited criticism after some guests, including popular soloist IU, were viewed as putting on a half-hearted performance. In addition, Sunday's episode spent 20 minutes reviewing the highlights of the last show, taking up most of the program, which viewers found unnecessary.
Nam Seung-yong, the producer of "Kiss and Cry," said, "Reality TV shows usually gain momentum as the show progresses. Viewers will become more interested when they get to hear about the real-life stories of the professional skaters."
