Fans from countries like Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam went to Japan in order to watch “Goong”. Those who were unable to get the tickets crowded in front of Minamiza Theatre and held a surprise demonstration to request for additional shows in Kyoto.
The performances of the Korean musical “Goong” in Japan show the unique outlook on the world, the original work and the unique vividness of the musical, coupled with the high standards of songs in Korean musical and the specialty of Kabuki theatre. The musical performance in Japan has more creativity, and the musical and newspapers noted that the actors showed more emotions compared with those from performances in Korea.
Asahi newspaper mentioned that Kyoto is the hometown of Kabuki theater and praised the musical for their content. The musical did incorporate concepts of the imperial family, about the country and traditional culture, and did not bring in too much pop culture that is normally seen in musical plays.
Although this was Kim’s first musical performance, he was very calm and capable. A fellow castmate who played the female lead was deeply touched and encouraged by the cheers and applause from the audience who filled up the theatre. All the actors/actresses are working harder than any times in order to repay the support.
